Seventeen Sentence Sunday: Mercy

I know, I know! Okay, don’t laugh at me. I had to add a few more sentences to the mix. Six or seven sentences just wasn’t enough for a wordy writer like me. What I love about you all is that I KNOW YOU DON’T MIND! Heh heh.

One of the fun things about posting these snippets is going back to my old books and scanning for good ones. I’ve had Mercy on the brain lately, so I thought I’d go back to where it all began and post seven(teen) sentences from this controversial (and bestselling!) book. This is from one of my favorite scenes.

“Listen to me, Lucy, I’m not a big fan of shame. I know I’m kinky. I know I’m crass. But I’m not ashamed, and I don’t want you to be.”

He lifted my chin, made me meet his eyes. One broad thumb swept the tears from one cheek and then the other as he spoke.

“So you like to get roughed up, get fucked, get ordered around. So what? I like doing those things to you. So you being ashamed around me is both annoying and ridiculous. Just go to sleep, instead of lying there crying like an idiot.”

“I’m not an idiot.” I tried to say it respectfully, but I guess I failed from the look on his face.

“Listen to me,” he said, his fingers digging into my chin. “You’re whatever the fuck I say you are when you’re with me.” He turned away from me again. “You’ll learn,” he muttered, and turned off the light with a snap of his wrist.

Hope you enjoyed that little snippet. That Matthew Norris can be a pretty big meanie but if you’ve read it, you know there’s much more going on beneath the surface. If you haven’t read Mercy yet, don’t let people scare you off. It is probably my “hardest” book aside from Club Mephisto, but there is a lot of sweetness in it too. Many of my readers claim it is their favorite book. Click the cover below to learn more about Mercy and to find buy links.

Oh, and soon Mercy will have a new cover that looks very much like the old one:

  1. Have read Mercy and very much enjoyed it.But after reading your post of I go to read it again:)

  2. Matthew Norris does it for me. I think he is the ultimate Dom for me. I re-read Mercy so many freaking times, I grew up on Harlequin Presents (which I still read to this day) so the hero meeting the heroine, doing everything he can to get her, (Matthew buying the dance company) in his pursuit of Lucy is an HP more in-depth and on steroids and full of color.

I have Mercy in book form, e-book form on my computer and on my Kindle. As well as Comfort Object.

    1. I so understand you, Matthew is probably not the Dom of my dreams (that would be Ryan-from “Fortune”), but he is one of the richest characters I now, he is so human, so full of flaws and I wanna to forgive every one of them.

  3. Mercy is a beautiful story and I will never ever tire of reading it! One of my all time favorite reads ever! Just superb!! I recommend it to anyone who will listen to me!

  4. Oh, thanks to everyone for your comments! I have always loved Mercy but I’ve gotten such hate mail and scathing reviews about it that I sometimes think about taking it down. But then I think about all the people who write and say they love it. And honestly, to this point, it’s my bestselling book, followed closely by Comfort Object. So clearly these books are doing it for most women. 😉
I don’t think anymore about taking it down, that’s for sure.

In fact, I guess I should write more hardass doms. Theo in Cirque du Minuit could fit in that club. Le Maitre in that book is begging for his own story too and I am envisioning something pretty hardcore for him. Hmm. Could be fun.

  5. Don’t you dare take down any of your books!!! That would only play into the hands of those bigoted zealots who crop up all over the place. If somebody doesn’t like your books I’m sure you can live with it, because there are enough people who do! If you give in to people like them it only opens the door to more narrowmindedness and eventually censorship. By ignoring them you take a stand for the freedom of writers!

  6. Yes, in the end I couldn’t do it for that reason. It’s the same reason I don’t take down and tamper and edit and “fix up” my older books even though there are always things I want to change in hindsight. It would be like censoring myself. Those books are a document of my life at that time, and for those who love them those stories are valuable just as they are. 🙂

  7. This only my opinion and I don’t want to speak ill of other readers and writers, but there are a lot of “authors ” out there that claim they write BDSM books but in their minds only include the lite spanking, furry handcuffs, and have their readers thinking that’s what the lifestyle consists of.

But when they buy books from authors in the know its a eyeopener and not in a good way because of what they read from those lite authors.

When I read Club Mephisto I didn’t understand or relate to how Molly functioned living the way she did, this really was a first for me in reading a 24/7 master & slave. BUT I read it and loved it.

I read some of the negative reviews for Mercy and I just shook my head because my mind went to well what kind of book did they think they were buying.

I’m on the opposite end as to when I buy a novel of this genre from an unknown author I’m more than likely will be disappointed with it because they don’t bring the pain. 🙂

  8. I totally know what you mean, Maddie. That’s why I started writing my own books in the first place. The ones that were well-edited, New-York published “BDSM” books were so watered down and vanilla that it was almost funny. The harder ones I liked were put out by the fly-by-night presses and were all terribly edited and written. I knew there was a vacuum to fill. I’m just glad you guys found me, and that you like what I’m doing.

  9. I have to agree with Maddie 100 percent, not that you didn’t know that already, but I wanted to add my 2 cents just to reinforce the positive comments. Oh, and I like my cover better. =P

  10. oh gosh, Izzy, I don’t even remember what your cover looks like! That’s how long you’ve been a reader of mine. 😉

    1. I was wrong when I posted, I thought it was DC on the cover of Mercy (which was fitting), but I went to confirm, and that was CO. You know, the one in the flat with a tie twisting in his hand. *sigh*

      1. Oh yes, yes. That was a nice one, lol. I know there were multiple covers for Owning Wednesday too but I couldn’t think of another Mercy one. Wish I could have used that cover for Comfort Object but obviously I didn’t own the rights to it, lol.

    1. Hi Maddie! Don’t panic, I’m not changing a bit of it, I just redid the paperback version because the old layout looked so outdated and amateur. Hey, I did it years ago before I had any actual readers, lol. I also changed the excerpt in the back of the ebook from Club Mephisto to Comfort Object. Just a marketing thing.

Don’t worry, I’ll never mess with the content of my books. It was bad enough re-editing Owning Wednesday for the Loose Id re-release. It made me sad, even though I think the book was improved at the end of it. It was still sad to see the old one go away…

OH, and I got a new cover for Cait and the Devil. That REALLY had to be done. I’ll be “unveiling” it officially soon but you can see it at Smashwords and All Romance Ebooks, probably Amazon in a couple days. 🙂

  11. Woo. Was scared there. I guess I’m late to the game about Wednesday. Didn’t find out about you when Wednesday 1st came out and when I did find you it wasn’t being offered. So what was re written I’m clueless about. Loved it though.

Will check out the new cover, I’m a freak about book covers for some reason I’m a freak for the good and bad. Suzanne Brockmann was so horrified over her Get Lucky cover she put a big smiley face sticker on Lucky. The hero was suppose to be drop dead gorgeous and he looked like the staypuff man.

    1. oh my goodness. I had to go look at the cover and I can’t say I blame her!

My most hated cover was for Deep in the Woods. Originally the guy had sunglasses on and I was like, REALLY? So rather than getting a new, more appropriate picture, they moved the Ellora’s Cave banner down to cover the sunglasses. You can see him reaching up to adjust them so it still looks stupid. That’s when I decided to start self publishing, lol, so I guess it all worked out for the best. .

      1. Oh my, never even noticed that about the cover. I still like the cover, at least he doesn’t have an extra limb.

  12. Mercy is my favorite yours! Now, that I’ve read that bluebird I’m going to have to read it again.

    1. HAHAHA. When I read that I was like, hmm…don’t remember a bluebird in that story. Anyway, hope you enjoy it as much the second time. 🙂
